Default working on a file in layout mode that resides on a server - 03-02-2010 , 03:55 PM

My workplace has FMP 10 Server with one file that about 6 to 8 people are on
at a time. We have had this for over one year and it is working fine.
People can get to the file from work but not from home, and that is the way
we want it. All are able to use the file and life is good. My question is,
Can I use the file during the day while the others are using it, and go into
Layout mode and make changes? Or will that interfere with the people using
it and cause them to possibly lose data? They are using FMP 9 on their
desktops. All are Windows XP and the server is on Windows 2003, I believe.

Yes you can ... if they are in a table you try to edit it or modify a
relationship you will be prompted by the server that a user is modifying the
record. No change can occur in your design while someone else is in the
record.

Thank you. I have used FMP for quite a while now but this is the first time
I have used it this way, from a server with several people using it all at
the same time.

Thanks again.

You can, but it can cause problems. If there's a hiccup on the
network while there are unsaved changes to the layout, you could
corrupt the layout (maybe worse, but I'm not sure). Backup before and
save your changes often.

Also, users will see the changes as you save them, which may be
annoying for them.

As other have said, you can do this, but it can cause problems.

Usually it's best for the "developer" to have the original version of the
database file(s) to work on, plus back-up copies. Once changes have been
made a copy of these files can then be transferred to the server - after
removing the old version and transferring the data across.

This way you also have a backup of the database file(s). If it / they
become corrupted on the server you can replace them with fresh copies and
(hopefully) transfer the data from the corrupt / rescued files. You should
of course also be backing up the server versions separately so that you
have the data if the entire thing fails.

You can do this, I have over an external SSH connection.
Is it a good idea? Is it safe? Opinion varies.

FM facilitate it, so the working assumption is, it is ok and there is
something somewhere in the FM literature that comments on it.
I have never felt comfortable though.
A additional element is an external connection, dropouts can wreck the
file; LAN is safer to a degree.
