Default From Windows to MAC - 07-12-2004 , 07:19 AM

Hello,

I've a solution build with FileMaker Developper Tool and running on Windows.
I have a request from a customer to use this application on MAC.

What should I do to build my application for MAC OS ? Should I install FM
Developper to a MAC then copies the files from Windows to MAC and then build
the stand alone application on the MAC ?

Thank you for your help

David

1. It's "Mac", not "MAC". It's an abbreviation, not an acronym. ;-)
2. Yes, that's exactly what you do. Install FMDev on a Mac and bind the
solution.
3. You should double check the layouts - sometimes fonts don't line up
the same.

Cheers,
Kevin

Fonts and images are the main culprits to check, especially if you've
used some non-standard fonts. There are actually no fonts installed as
standard that are the same for both Windows and MacOS, although
FileMaker tries hard to match them to something similar (eg. Times New
Roman -> Times), but horizontal and vertical alignments will change.

You will also need to reset any stored Page Setup script commands on
the Mac using whatever printer driver the final person has - otherwise
they all default back to Letter Portrait.

There are a couple of script commands that are OS specific, but they're
rarely used ones and fairly obvious (eg. Send Apple Event and Perform
AppleScript only work on the Mac).

You discussed fonts, but not images. FYI, some kinds of images,
especially those created and stored on Windows, display on a Mac as a
little graphic of the Windows logo. If you use images, careful testing is
needed. I'm a bit hazy on the specifics, but I think any image that
originated as a TIFF or JPEG should display okay on both platforms. If
you create an image on Windows, it becomes a bitmapped thing that won't
display on a Mac. I've never had any problems with images that originated
on a Mac being able to be seen properly on both platforms.

I've been able to use .GIF and .JPG images with 5.5 fine, and have created
these guys on a PC for ultimate use both platforms.

When I use containers under 5.5, people sometimes complain about the
cross-platform file type support wierdness. .PDF files being visible on a
Mac, but showing as an icon on the PC..

If I have a file made in fmp 6 windows, can I send a copy of it to someone using fmp 6
mac? IT should work fine, besides the teaks of fonts and images, right?

It should work correctly yes.

If emailing, it usually a good idea to zip the file up first.

Cool, that's what I thought. We just had visitors to my program, and they just started
using fmp on Mac, and they liked how I tweaked fmp for my office, and I offered them a
copy of my database. But in the back of my mind, I was somewhat unsure about compatability.

It depends on how the images were done. Some TIFF and JPEG files use
QuickTime on the Mac to do the compression which can cause problems on
a Windows PC.

Another problem is that Windows uses BMP as it's underlying image
format while Macs use PICT (or PDF in MacOS X). Setting the document's
Preferences to "store compatible graphics" should fix that though.

Also Windows and MacOS computers have slightly different colour
schemes, so a database on the Mac with a nice yellow background may
look like a disgusting greeny-yellow (for example) on a Windows PC.

There's always problems when swapping between Windows and MacOS, but
thankfully most are fairly minor and easily fixed (if at the expense of
extra time).

You should ALWAYS double-check your cross-platform documents on the
target computer, whether their FileMaker, Word or anything else. For
Mac users this can be a simple as using Virtual PC to run Windows
(although colour shifts may not display exactly like a real PC). For
Windows users there is no up-to-date emulation of a Mac, so you need a
real Mac.
