Default What product to use... - 12-20-2006 , 06:28 PM

Hi...

I have developed a system for a client (FM 8.5 Adv) on a MacOSX system
and the client will be using it on a Windows based system.

1. I assume that there is no problem moving the .fm7 file from the Mac
to Windows, correct?
2. The client is a small company and will have (at most) maybe
5-concurrent users. If the client purchases 8.5 Pro Advanced and
creates a .exe file, and puts the .exe on a shared drive, is there a
limit as to how many users can concurrently access the app?

TIA,
Joe

Yes -- 1.

Standalones created with FMPro/Adv are not multi-user capable. They cannot
even be clients of a hosted FileMaker Pro system.

Your options are to purchase one copy of FileMaker for each concurrent user,
or design the system to use Instant Web Publishing, which can handle five
simultaneous users (in addition to the five FileMaker Pro clients).

Point 1 : I would like just add that while, yes, a db created on one
platform can be put as is on another platform and work, there are slight
differences :
- one is the way characters are rendered in Mac and PC : they tend to be
smaller on PC than on Mac. The solution is to use a 'good' font and size -
Verdana, 11 pt is often chosen - and to draw the field's rectangles a little
bigger than usual.
- another is that the 'path' is not set the same way on a mac -
folderA:folderB:fieldC - while in PC it is folderA\folderB\fieldC. So the
script has to take care of the platform if you create the path yourself.
- a third is the way the OS handle the windows. MacOS does it much better
that Windows. So you may provide in your scripts a tighter control of the
way windows shows up.
(I may not be 100% accurate in my description, as I did not check it
precisely before posting, but many people have said that already much better
than me)

Bill has already answered the second one, but the first question is
slightly more complicated than "no problems".

You have to be careful about the fonts you use. Many of the fonts
included as standard with Mac OS X are not on Windows and vice-versa.
Also the way the two operating systems render fonts, window gadgets,
etc. are different. This can cause minor alignment problems on layouts.

Graphics can sometimes cause a few problems, especially if you use
something peculiar to the Mac like PICT images.

FileMaker tries hard to get around these problems and, for example,
attempts to substitute a similar font.

There are also problems with printers, unless you're using the
(usually) default portrait US Letter for all printouts. Scripts that
store / restore the Page Setup information will have to be reset on the
target computer to store that computer's particular printer options.

As with any other form of development work, you MUST test and usually
tweak the database on the target system ... whether that's going
cross-platform or just from one Mac to another. If you're working on a
Mac, then something like Virtual PC (for older Macs) or Parallels
Desktop (for new Intel Macs, or Apple's Boot Camp) is invaluable and
saves having to have two separate computers.
