Weird find/sort error -

I work for a leaflet distribution company, and we use Filemaker for a
variety of tasks that rely on finds - find everything with a start date
less than today, constrain to everything with an end date greater than
today.
I've performed those finds for eighteen months with a script that
inserts ">" and "Get (CurrentDate)" into my end date field, and it has
been merrily chugging away.
Until, that is, yesterday. Yesterday that particular find request threw
up records that ended in October while not finding others which are
still running.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. I've looped find requests
for a whole year and found that the results it threw up were truly
bizarre - as was the sort order it devised for the diagnosis field
(number of records & space & date, which was sorted by day. The latter
seems to have righted itself (I've got a printout at home to prove that
I'm not making things up) and I've imported the date into a new date
field which is behaving impeccably, but my (rather worried) question is
whether Filemaker is known to just go completely crazy, and if so,
whether there is anything I can do to prevent it in the future.
