Default Web Companion: all ports works on local network but fail from wan - 11-03-2006 , 06:58 AM

192.xxx.x.xx:591 works perfectly in local enviroment.
If I try from a remote pc: www.mysite.com:591 it won't work.
I tried other port: 8080, 9000...no way!
I tried IP_pubblic:591 ... no way!

Server used: windows 2003 small business server
IIS v. 6
File Maker pro 8.0

any idea?
thanks

It seems like we answer this question three times a week.

You must set up "port forwarding" on your router so that the appropriate
port on your external IP maps to the correct machine in your internal
network. By default that is port 80 for FileMaker Pro 8's IWP.

Search Google Groups in this newsgroup for more details.

Another thing to think about is the modem.

Some Cable & DSL Modems have firewalls. That can block access to your
FileMaker database over the web. You should turn off the firewall in the
modem, and rely on the router firewall. Then when you have port
forwarding set up correctly on the router, people should be able to get
to your Filemaker database via the Web. The term "bridge mode" is often
applied to having the modem's firewall turned off.

I do not have any control over the router!
The router belongs to my ISP. Although is located in our office I could
not manage it because I do not have any access to it.
And port 80 is already used by my web site: Small Business Server.

With Port 80 already in use, you have to use another port for FileMaker.
I believe Port 591 is reserved for Filemaker in the great port registry
in the sky.

Of course, you have to instruct the router to forward the desired port.
If only your ISP can do that, talk with your ISP about doing it.

Port 591 is reserved for FileMaker's "application" communications... since
he's using IWP he would probably want port 8080, which is an approved
alternate address for web traffic. If he used port 591, some customers would
not be able to reach his site because of blocked ports on the firewall.

Nevertheless, if the router is under the ISP's control then whatever port
that he selects needs to be opened and forwarded. It would be the same
process that he followed to get port 80 directed to his SBS. Incidentally,
it would be possible for FileMaker Server Advanced to run on the SBS server
and use that web server for IWP; the address would simply be a subdirectory
off the main server.
