Default Vertical Scroll Bars arrrggghhh! - 09-28-2005 , 11:00 AM

Hello everyone, I have a question about filemaker pro and vertical
scroll bars. I have created a layout with two facing fields, both of
which have scroll bars. I want to read the content of field A and
switch to field B to make notes. My problem - when I go beyond the
window of field A and scroll down and then switch to field B to make my
notes, Field A resets itself back to the top, making it impossible for
me to see what is in field A and write about it in B. Is there any way
to stop the vertical scroll bar from reseting when I switch fields? I
know this behavior is common in a lot of web pages, so shouldn't I be
able to do this in Filemaker?

You could if FM were a web browser. But it's a database. The scroll bar
is active and scrolled down as long as the field is active and in focus.
When focus switches to the new field, it's going to lose the scrollbar
lock.

Think of your interface in a new way. What information do you need to
see in A to make your notes? Is there a way to bring the most recent
info in A to the top, where you can see it? What if you had a second
field, C, that extracted and displayed the last 500 characters of A, if
the most recent data is what you need?

If you have FM8, can you open a new window, and place them side by side,
so that you can size A all the way down and scroll the WINDOW (not the
field) to the bottom.

If you are in field A in one window, you won't be able to edit B in
another, btw, because you can lock a record against yourself in FM 7 or
8.

There are always ways to do just about anything in FM, as long as you
don't get stuck in the "It doesn't work like Xapp, so I can't do it"
trap.

Filemaker 8 also allows you to keep the scroll from moving to the top.

How can I do this in Filemaker 8? I downloaded the demo today to give
it a try.
Thanks!

I think what Sert meant to say is that FM8 allowed you to keep the
scrolling *in portals* from jumping to the top. This is not possible
for regular text fields.
