Default Variable Length Portals - 11-23-2006 , 06:12 AM

Hi,
does anyone know how to make a portal variable length? The layout with
the portals is required in browse mode for data entry. I'm using FM8 on
Mac OSX.

For example:

====================
Item Cost
Baked Beans $2
Bread $2
Pasta $5
Tuna $1
Bananas $1

Total $11
====================

or

====================
Item Cost
Pasta $5

Total $5
====================

A button can be used to add new portal rows as required, but I would
like no vertical space wasted if a portal is empty.

Thanks in advance,
Mark.

Portals can't be "variable length". They're designed to be a set height
and width.

It could be faked in a couple of ways, but it would be a LOT of effort
for no real benefit that I can think of. Since you're in Browse mode
there isn't be any "wasted space" - the screen is a set size itself, so
whether you put anything on that area or not the space is still there.
You can't Slide fields into the blank space in Browse mode either, even
if Portals themselves could Slide smaller (they can't).

If you're trying to get such a system so that the records take up less
space when printed, then you're best to print from the related file
where you can then use a normal Body part which will automatically grow
or shrink with the number of rows.

In addition to what Harry mentioned, the standard solution is to set your
portal to display scroll bars.
