Is there any way to create a value list on the fly from something other
than a layout?

What I want to do is create a value list that lists the files in a
folder, which constantly changes. Best I can do right now is run an
Applescript that lists the folder, zaps a layout and feeds the list into
a series of new records. That seems really convoluted.

A file manipulation plugin such as Troi File (troi.com) would allow you to populate a field with a list of files in a folder, but if you already have an AS that does the job, save your money.
