Default Using a pool of numbers only once? - 10-02-2005 , 10:50 AM

Hi, I have an Asset Management DB I’ve been creating with FileMaker Pro7
and it’s turning out real nice. There are several relations that feed a
central display DB. What I’m trying to do now is link in my Software
Library DB with the Asset Management. I already have the relation
created but I don’t know how to limit the use of Software Serial
numbers. In the Software Library I have different titles and many serial
numbers. When a Title is added to an Asset I want to be able to select
from the remaining unused Serial numbers. Then when the same title is
added to another Asset the previously used Serial number is no longer
available. This way we make sure no two computers are using the same
Serial number/Key as another. I guess another way of asking the same
question is how to create a pool of numbers and allow each number to
only be used once.

Thanks,
~Ben

The easiest thing that comes to mind is to store the ID of the asset in
the Serial number file. Then you can create a calc filed that shows
the serial number if no asset is attached to that serial number and
create a value list based on the calc.

Intresting. I'll mess around with that at work.
Thank you,
