Default UPS at night and stopping FMS - 09-29-2010 , 02:51 AM

Hi,
I have a client with a small setup - a small Dell Server PC with Small
Windows Server 2003 using only FMS5.5 + 10 PCs), and an UPS to protect the
server.
Now, when a problem occurs (e.g. power failure) the UPS operates for 10 mn
then stops. At night, I make FMS to do a backup of the 50 fp5 files. If the
UPS has to work then, FMS is forced to stop at the end of the 10 mn.
My question is : how can I make the FMS service stop in a proper manner when
UPS operates ?
I have no clue for that.
Any help would be welcome.

Depends on the computer and the UPS - consult the manual on the latter to
see if it has a serial or USB link, and a driver that can be installed on
the computer. In principle, the UPS can signal to the server that it is
on emergency power so that the server can terminate all running processes
and shutdown in an orderly manner. I don't know what FMS5.5 would do if
asked to quit part way through its backup procedure, though.

Thanks for the answer and the time you took for me.
You are right : I checked with the UPS provider and he can give a model that
has that function. In fact they say I will be able to stop the FileMaker
Server from the 'Service'.
problem solved.
