Default Trying to Solve Shell Game Between Part and Fields in Layout Mode - 06-28-2005 , 03:53 PM

Hi -

I upgraded to FMP 7.0v3 on Mac OS 10.3.9 a couple months ago, though my
years as a FileMaker developer go back to every version through FMP 3.
Despite this experience, I'm having a hard time coming to grips with
strange behavior I'm encountering in FMP 7 -- and I don't know whether
it's something I missed in the documentation, which I've read
extensively, or my own confusion, or the application's general
bugginess.

I'm finding that in layout mode, my attempt to resize the body
sometimes results not in the body moving, but in fields shifting up or
down equal to the distance I was dragging the body. This often moves
them off the layout entirely, something that wasn't possible in earlier
versions of FM and seems to serve no point.

The fields move even when all elements are deselected and also when the
fields themselves are locked. This only happens when I drag the body
part, not when I change coordinates in Object Size.

In addition, on the particular layout I'm dealing with at the moment,
the top 26 or so records are not visible in List View, no records are
visible in Table View, though all records can be browsed in Form View
and are visible in Preview Mode. The exact number of records that
aren't visible depends on how I size the header (which is also not
visible in List and Table views), though the range is about 24-28.
Note that this isn't a case of omitted records: I can still access the
records by control-paging to them, so that the record number below the
Rolodex will reflect what record I'm in -- I just won't be able to see
the data in that record. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If
so, what's the work-around.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Best,
-S.

Do you have a Body part with fields in it? Sub-summary parts won't
display in browse mode.

My other suggestion would be that you have a corrupt layout. Have you
tried creating a new layout from scratch (no copying and pasting, as
this could copy any corruption along with the paste)?

Hi, Howard -

Thanks for the reply. It is indeed a body part, not a sub-summary, but
I was able to create the layout from scratch without re-creating the
problem, per your suggestion.

What do you think would cause a layout to be corrupted? The file has
never crashed and as far as I can tell, I've never done anything
inappropriate with it, such as threatening to move to Access or take
away its priveleges. Also, this isn't the first case of layout hijinx
I've experienced in fp7 -- I've had similar problems with other files
that likewise have never crashed. Is spontaneous file corruption
possible? I don't remember it being an issue with fp5.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks again for your help.

Best,
-Sug
