Default Tab-Object v.s. Own build - 06-29-2007 , 06:47 AM

FMP 8.5
Win XP
In the last few days I have been disecting a couple of professional
solutions. What struck me most was the use of own-build tab-object
interfaces, almost none used the native tab-object. With the extensive use
of global fields that hold the graphics for the user interface. So I
wondered what you might think of that.

Keep Well, Ursus

Well, we don't hold much weight, but we don't feel the look and
controls of the built in tabs fit every application of use. I may
want 3 tabs on the left and 2 tabs on the right, I may want different
looks to the corners and edges.

FMP tabs are still in their infancy (wonder what upgrades they get in
v9), so also consider when the professional solutions were written,
the professional tab controls may have been developed before the FMP
native tabs were introduced.

Personally, I use the native tabs for my own personal stuff, but I
like to be more creative and professional looking with navigational
tabbing structures than native tabs currently support... that may not
always be the case if FM applies itself to developing their tabs.
Just my $0.02.

Do you create graphics inside (native) or outside FMP? I have never used
anything else then the buttons, portals etc from filemaker itself. Creating
graphics is not my forte. And I find myself learning again... (which in
itself is not a bad thing...)

Ah, here is where I may have a tilted advantage... I got started in
computers doing graphics, so yes, I do a lot of my own icon, button,
edging & borders outside of FMP... In fact, I'm not sure the last
time I used FMP graphics for anything other than the occasional line
or basic box..

However, as I am now learning and writing SQL (my job is transitioning
from FMP to SQL), I tend to take the quick way out and use some
graphics packs - I think I have 5 or 6 different packs.

I hope to keep some FMP presence as I learn to meld it with SQL, but
either way, I'll still need to utilize my graphics background for the
web driven front end. In retrospect, the FMP native tabs may be the
best way for some developers to create tabbed navigation, if they do
not have an adequate graphics program... I did not think about that,
cause it is all about me, ya know? LOL kidding. Seriously.

I think the reason for this is that these professional solutions were
created in FM 5/6 and it's a ton of work to convert those existing
"home-built" tab layouts to the new method and they haven't bothered
yet.

I don't think so. Most of them are clearly 8 and up. (Variables. single file
solutions etc.)

Keep well, Ursus
