Default strange problem in my network - 12-03-2006 , 10:04 AM

Hi there... i have a strange problem with fm and 2 macs in a network :
a g3, a g4. and a win2k..... all of theme has got fm with a licence.
when i have my db in the g3 and i try with the others to connect remotely
with the db all is ok: everyone can do that.... but if i put my db on the g4
i can't open the db remotely from the other stations.... win 2k or g3 it's
the same thing.... when i try to open with a remote session the db i can see
the computer but not the db.... why? Can anyone help me?

Just to verify : how do you 'open remotely' ? You know that FileMaker has
its own way of 'sharing' files among a network, thet may - that will - enter
in conflict with the regular OS way of sharing. Therefore, the files to be
'FM shared' have to be in a 'non-OS shared' folder.
The thing that worries me in your question is the sentence : "when i try to
open with a remote session the db i can see the computer but not the db"
which seems to imply that you try to open via the regular OS sharing
mechanism instead of the 'FM' ones. To be sure : in FM : hit 'File' then
'Open' then 'Host' and see if you see the FM files.
Same thing : on the G4 do you have TCP/IP chosen in its local FM preferences
?

hi thanks for your help....
as u can think i have not open these files with regular os network sharing,
but as you told i used file, then open then host.... when the files, which
ar not in a system folder, are in g3 and i try this procedure with g4 or
win2k, clicking on the g3 i can see the files and open them; but if the
files are on the g4 (not in a system folder) i can see the host but not the
files......
can you explain me this....

I am not very good in fm.... so i don't know this option.... how can i
activate it? to what it serves?
thanks again

I can't explain why it does not work from here : the only thing I can do is
to check your setup is 100% correct. With your answer you seem to have
checked it all, except maybe the TCP/IP part.
- As for how to choose TCP/IP, it depends on the FM version :
(FM7/8): Edit > Sharing > FileMaker Network > Network Sharing (should be
'On')
(FM5/6): Edit > Preferences > Application > Network Protocol (choose TCP/IP)
- >>to what it serves?<< : well, it allows FM to use your network.
A good habit to have, by the way, is to develop your FM solution with TCP/IP
off, so that your solution does not carry - inside and hidden - your own
local IP address, that it will search afterwards over and over, retarding
the opening (a little) but more if it finds your file on one of these
addresses it may well open it (if it has the exact same name) instead of
opening your expected file. That's why we all say that you should never have
many copies of your files around except the backup ones if you use
FMS(Server). You have to have only one copy of the files to be shared (or
else change the files' names e.g. for backup).
HTH.
Let us know what happens.
