Default Strange FileMaker bug - 08-04-2003 , 02:40 AM

There's a peculiar, although trivial, bug in Mac FileMaker 5.x (Mac),
and I'm fairly sure I've noticed it in earlier versions too.

When you choose the Delete All Records option from the menu, FileMaker
will sometimes beep three times and display the "Are you sure?"
message, but other times it'll only beep once and display the message.

Weird! \

I've noticed that myself. The problem seems to have gone away by version
6. At least, I don't recall encountereing it since I upgraded.

Speaking of weird problems, here's one from version 6 (hosted on Win2000,
running on both Macs & PCs). I have a layout that prints lists of book &
video titles. To make a slightly different report, I duplicated the
layout, added & subtracted some fields (all numeric fields involving
costs), and added a different sort to the script that brings one there.
The original layout, call it A, prints titles that look like this:

Eyewitness: Volcano - VHS
Eyewitness: Mammal - VHS
Eyewitness: Bear - VHS
Eyewitness: Plant - VHS
Eyewitness: Whale - VHS

However, when I print the same data from my new layout, call it B, the
*exact same text field* (remember, I duplicated the layout and did not
touch this field). now prints like this:

Eyewitness: olcano - HS
Eyewitness: Mammal - HS
Eyewitness: Bear - HS
Eyewitness: Plant - HS
Eyewitness: Whale - HS

For some reason, FM chose to ignore the letter "V"! This letter is
missing both onscreen and on paper, though the data is okay. If I switch
back to layout A, the "V" reappears, in the same text field. Anybody have
a clue?

Steve,
Disappearing letters in FM text may be the result of a corrupt font.
Reinstalling the font from a dependable source solved the problem for
me.

Good idea. I was printing on a machine on our network I rarely use. I'll
take a look at its font issues. Thanks.
