Default Stopping the new - 08-04-2003 , 06:00 AM

What would be the best way to stop user from using the "New record" request
from the "Records" menu but still allow them to create a new record from a
button and script that I have made.

Have tried passwords but this stops the script from working...

Any ideas ???

Thanx in advanced

Try disabling the menu commands with the password so they don't have access
to the New Record command. The only problem with this is you will need to
script every action the users need to do from the menus.

"Have tried passwords but this stops the script from working... "

Yes it would, if you unchecked New Record. You need to leave those
things checked and just change your Available Menu Commands to Edit
Only. When Terry suggests 'disabling' the Menu Command I believe this
is what he meant, as there is no 'disable' listed - it's only Normal,
Edit Only or None (although it may be different on different FM
versions). Changing it to Edit means they can't Add Record through
Menus but scripts will Add Record even if they are the User.

To be a bit more specific if you haven't established Access Privileges
yet - in Passwords be sure to set yourself up with all privileges. Then
set up a GENERAL password for everyone else. On this General password,
change the privileges on the Available Menu Commands to Edit Only. And
also unclick Change Password. You might also deselect Design, Edit
Scripts, etc. if you wish.

Then go to Edit > Preferences > Document > Try default password and
enter this General password.

The added benefit of this is that it disables the Duplicate Record
command which is dangerous. But it means, as indicated, that you will
need to script for add, delete, import, etc. But in reality, this is
best anway. This gives you much more control over the database and
Users and, as we all know, we love control!! - uhh, for their own
protection, of course!
