Default Start New Page if field won't fit on current page - 04-18-2007 , 02:15 AM

FM Pro 8.5 Adv

I'm attempting to get a field (3-4 lines of text) to not run over 2 pages
when printing. There is much talk of various types of summaries in the
on-screen help files, which I believe are involved in what I am attempting.

I need a few hints as now to proceed and perhaps some help in pointing me to
somewhere where I can find a better reference on the subject of printing and
the layout parts available within Filemaker.

Thanks!

There is actually very little you can do to to keep a field from
breaking short of ensuring the layout part fits into a single page.
You can't tell it to break if a field is going to cross a boundary.

You can set layout *parts* not to break accross a page boundary, but
that's on by default anyway. And since you can't set multiple body
parts that doesn't usually help much.

The page break/before after summaries, is really only useful for long
reports. Say your printing bank statements, and you want each
customers records to start on a new page, for example. That sort of
thing. Its not the fine control you are looking for.

Someone might know of a work around, but this is one of those cases,
where I find it more efficient to live within the limitations of
filemaker, and figure out a way of ensuring each part isn't more than
one page long.

Hi

Thanks for the comments.

Something to learn to live with, I guess!

Or when the Layout has to be longer than a page, make sure you position
the fields so they don't go over the page break (which can be difficult
when using some Layout parts since they screw up the reliability of the
page break line FileMaker displays). This of course means you can't use
Sliding though.
