A client wants to use a dedicated label printer, the kind that prints out on a roll of single label width. How do I set this up with filemaker? It seems like I'd need to be able to pick a page setup from the printer dialog box that was appropriate for single-label printing. Would that come with the printer driver? I want to be able to tell my client whether he should go ahead and buy the dedicated label printer.... then we can figure it out. |

It isn't too difficult to create the layout. You need to use PageSetup to set the printer for the label printer when you are creating the layout. Then you pretty well create the layout as with any other use. Several years ago I was working for a company that purchased a printer to make their own plastic membership card for their members. Working on Windows, I found 3rd party method to change printers. We created the member record (name address phone etc.) and then launched a script that printed to the card printer to print a personalized plastic card, switch printers to the laser to print a welcome-letter from the general manager, and then prompt to put a #10 envelope into the printer to print the envelope. Worked slick :-) TK Greg Dember wrote: A client wants to use a dedicated label printer, the kind that prints out on a roll of single label width. How do I set this up with filemaker? If we get the label-printing device, and install it's driver software, does that supply the operating system with a PageSetup option? Yes, the installation of the device will provide the page setup options |

Yes, the installation of the device will provide the page setup options (with an 's') that apply to that particular printer. With the device you also get a manual that you'd better read thoroughly to make it work. Remi-Noel |

Just to note - on one single label printer I've worked with, I had to adjust left and right margins in filemaker's layout setup to get them exact so that the layout printed ok from filemaker. If you have problems where your layout doesnt seem to be printing, just print a full page layout to the label printer and see what part of the layout prints. Also see what the label printer needs to know what label size it is printing. Some you need to tell each time you change the labels, some have sensors that can determine it themself. One of the great things about filemaker is that you can use each label like a regular page and print 2+ columns with header, footer, and multiple records if you need to. Using most label software connected to an external database you can't do that - at least not at all easily. You need to play with it a little to make sure everything has exact placement for the label, but I've found it works very well. JF --- thanks for the lead. I saw a review of it that said it was not so good for Macs. I'm wondering is your experience on a Mac or Windows machine? I had been trying to get a Dymo 330 (something) to work from a mac 10.4.8 over the last couple of moths. It prints, but trying to get it to print in the correct orientation, has so far proved impossible. The matrix of page setup orientation, Filemaker layout sizes/label configs... nada effective. I'm open to suggestions |
