Yes, I guess the vast majority of *proprietary* software is like that.
That's why I'm a fan of open-source

I'd disagree. In fact the product page for FMD7 doesnt even mention
stand-alone runtimes. Its a bullet point near the bottom of the features
overview, and networkability is addressed pretty clearly in the FAQ.
I mean the main point of my rant, not the main feature of FMD7.
When a program allows me to create other (stand-alone) programs (e.g. a
compiler/code generator), I don't expect it to have this kind of
limitations.

My boss (who bought FM before I
knew what FM was) thought it meant it could create database
applications that can be used by several people concurrently,

It *can* make database applications that run concurrently.
You know very well that I was referring to the runtime.

Anyway, I understand the situation now. I'll let him know and decide.

Thanks
Adrian

Indeed.

Honestly most compilers dont come with redistributable licenses for
concurrent multiuser database engines. Many of them don't come with
licenses for any database redistribution at all.

In the last several years MS has bundled JET into the OS so you didn't
have to redistribute it, users bought the license as part of the OS...
provided they used Windows of course, and its true MSDE, the on-ramp to
SQL Server allows for 5 users and is redistributable, but Microsofts
strategy is pull you into SQL Server.

The point is, I think its a little unrealistic to actually expect FMD7
to allow networkable redistributables, just because it can compile them
into standalones. I sure wouldn't have.

When you look at other venders in filemakers market segment, e.g. 4D,
you see the same sort of thing. In fact they even sell a 'stripped
down' client strictly for application deployment use with no
'development features'... but when you look at the pricing its pretty
much what you pay for the fully loaded FM Pro so from that point of view
FM Pro is the network client with some free design/development features.

(And here you probably thought I was just making that 'packaging' stuff
up to suit my argument. )
