Default Setting up IWP on Server - nedd help - 10-07-2005 , 10:22 AM

Could somone please answer this question:

Filemaker Pro Server 7 Advanced is running on the LAN

A host machine is running a database that I wish to access from the
Internet. IWP is toggled on.

To view the database remotely over the web ...do I enter the IP address of
the HOST machine running the application.

Second, what other things must be done to get access via the web ... reset
ports??? etc.

Assuming what you're calling IWP is what I call FileMaker Web Companion on
FM5.5/6.0, you would refer to the IP address of the IWP machine, not the
server. And yes, if you're the other side of the firewall you'll have to
ensure that rules for the appropriate ports and/or internal/external IP
addresses are configured into the firewall.

In FileMaker 7 and 8 the web publishing is actually done by the server,
not FileMaker Pro.
Yes, FileMaker Pro can do web publishing but only 5 users, any more
than that and you have to use FileMaker Server Advanced.

Also, if you are looking at distributing runtime applications, keep in
mind that the 5 users can only access web-published databases from FM8
Pro by using the full version of FM8 Pro. My understanding is that you
will need Server if you want runtime FM8 apps to access web-published
data. This tends to seriously limit the capabilities of FM8 Pro Advanced
and its neat runtime features.

As far as I know, runtime apps cannot host files or access remote files
whatsoever, regardless of whether FileMaker Server is used or not. Runtimes
are strictly single-user applications.

Only full versions of FileMaker Pro can access shared databases. (A severe
limitation of runtimes into today's networked world.)
