Note the result is a bitmap; it won't come out as nicely as a PDF would. But
it does work in FileMaker versions going back to FileMaker 3. If you have
FileMaker 8 and don't need a runtime solution then PDF is the better way to
go, as it is high resolution and potentially editable with Acrobat
Professional. However, another nice trick is that it copies according to the
zoom level of Preview. In other words, if you copy at 400% you will get a
very high resolution bitmap. Correspondingly, copying at 50% results in a
"thumbnail" type view.

FileMaker has long been able to "Copy" what you see in Preview mode to the
clipboard. If you write a simple script such as:

Enter Preview Mode []
Copy [Select]
Enter Browse Mode []
Paste [Select; YourDB::ContainerField]

The output will be stored in ContainerField as a WMF (or PICT) file that
you can send to people. Of course, the result is limited to a single page
at a time; WMF/PICT are not as nice a format as PDF, and neither is
especially cross-platform. Nevertheless, there are viewers for both on
each side of the fence, and it is a way to get the output of a report into
a field within a runtime solution.

In windows it is possible to program windows to accept new formats for the
clipboard. If someone did that for the PDF format.
it would be possible to paste pdfs into container fields

That said, Mac's can create PDFs from any print job, and you can get
free software to do same for windows.
surely, but you loose the naming of the resulting file with varaibles.
big deception for me !

There are filemaker plugins available to handle your more advanced
requirements.

It would be nice if it were built in to the runtimes, but until that
happens, there are other options.
