Default SecureFM plugin, reliable and stable? - 08-12-2003 , 09:29 PM

I am considering to buy SecureFM plugin. Is this plugin stable and
reliable? Any bugs found?

Eric

One of THE BEST plugins around. Absolutely stable, reliable, and with a
wonderful interface for creating strings. I've had a developer's license
for about 2 years, and have purchased site licenses for several 50 seat
sites. Troi is a really solid company, and Peter Baanen is great about
answering technical questions, though truly, I've never had any problems
deploying SecureFM.

Works on both platforms and all versions of FM without a hitch. Hint:
keep separately named copies of your administration/string generation
files for each project you use it for.

I agree, both Troi and New Millennium are solid companies.

One SecureFM problem I was trying to figure out today is:
How do you deal with a setup where your customer has some of their own
FileMaker databases that they want to be able to run alongside your
system? I can't really see any good solution, as SecureFM can't be
implemented on a file-by-file basis, it's all or nothing.

In particular, I want to be able to disable my files' close boxes, but
still let the customer close their own files.

One other item you should be aware of: FileMaker's preferences must be
locked down by SecureFM, otherwise a user could easily defeat the plugin
by simply turning it off.

Thanks, Lynn. I was thinking along those lines as well. I don't think
this will be a show-stopper for us either. But I'm considering using a
preference field, so a client who insists on having it both ways can do
so, but also assume the risk of broken script when their users close
files they're not supposed to.

I'm also looking at other options, possibly Dacons Menu Control or
Practicemaker's Window Utility. They appear to allow file-by-file
control. Of course, that means I'd have to be more careful setting it up
too.

What I've done for some customers is give them a "Open Other Files"
button which closes down all but one file in MY solution, releases the
SecureFM restrictions, and allows them to open their other files. The
single file left open lets them re-enter my solution without having to
log in again, reinstating the SecureFM. It also has a "checkstring" in
each script, which is removed when the SecureFM is released, so they
can't try running those scripts from an outside file.

I tell my users they just CAN'T run my solution and non-solution files
side by side on the same machine. If they need same-time access, they
can put a laptop beside the desktop machine and log in separately. So
far this issue hasn't been a stopper, as in most cases the "other files"
are legacy files being replaced by my solution, so the need to access
them goes away eventually.
