Default Schedule Exit Script - 10-05-2011 , 12:37 PM

IMac - Lion - FMPA 11.0v4

Hello Group,

For some reason my friend's IMac often logs out at will - usually
after being idle for some time.

If I try to log in remotely (P2P) through LogMeIn or TeamViewer, I get
a message that the computer is not online.

I tried scheduling a shutdown of the IMac every early morning followed
by a startup.

It seems to work fine - I can then log on

The problem is that FMPA is open & I'm afraid of damage.

I am looking for a script which would exit the database every evening
at 8 p.m.

Please request further info if needed, I must have this working before
Saturday.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check the Preferences. I think in the Security section there's an option
to log off idle users.

If the iMac is shutting down using the schedule, then FileMaker will be
properly quitting. Same should be true when the user is logged out. Why
not just reschedule the shutdown for 8:00pm?

If you still want to exit FileMaker, then you could try an Automator
application that runs in the bacground checking the time and them quitting
FileMaker (or simply shutting down the iMac).

As usual, thanks Helpful Harry but when I opened the database after
performing the listed procedure, I got a message that the database was
being recovered.

I don't want to schedule the shut down for 8 p.m. because I may need
to go in during the night - in addition, I set the startup to be about
7 minutes after the shutdown so the problem would remain.

The problem does not seem to be FMP although it is the only
application this occurs with. I don't know if it is the IMac or the
internet but it was getting quite disturbing.

Any further thoughts ?
One thing I forgot to mention : I must set the 'Computer Sleep' to
never because if it does sleep or the relogin screen is up, the only
way to 'wake it' is to move the mouse on the spot !

If the iMac is logging out, then it would usually be a Preference setting
- mine's an old version of Mac OS X, so I'm not sure where it is (Screen
Saver, Security, Users, or Energy Saver options). That should stop it
logging out in the first place.

Unless it's a faulty Mac OS X Preference setting that's causing the
problem. You could try creating a new User account (with the appropriate
permissions to access the database or a copy of it) and se if that solves
the problem. Or you could remove the appropriate plist file from the
current user's account and re-set the Mac OS X Preference options.

It could simply be the user logging out manually. Or it could even be
software / hardware problems or powercuts that are crashing the system.

There's no real reason why the iMac can't be left running and logged in,
unless of course it's been done on purpose for security reasons.

Database files that have been "recovered" shouldn't really be used for
anything except extracting the data to be imported into fresh / clean
backup copies of the files.

Harry,

Did you know that the domain yourisp.com actually exists? That
means that their mail server is probably being hit with spam for
the yourname account...

If you're trying to provide a non-routing e-mail in the headers,
you can either use one of example.com, example.net, and example.org,
or you can append .invalid (.local or localhost will also achieve
the same effect).

Cheers!

Don't worry. The "yourisp.com" domain name is owned by a someone simply
sitting on the domain name hoping someone else will want to buy it from
them for a large sum of money. The greedy scum deserves all the spam they
get (which won't be much, if any, anyway).

Originally the name and email address were simply the defaults in the
Newsreader programe I was using - I couldn't change it since the computer
belonged to someone else and I was using it when my computer couldn't log
on to the Internet (thanks to a hopeless Internet provider).

I would be too.

I would use a shell script to close the file(s) if specific files can be
targeted, and quit FM.

A better alternative would be to write a small FM file to calculute the
open files/windows (easy), and close them, and quit FM, then just
execute that file via a launchd/shell script

launchd is the preferred approach for executing the shell script; cron
jobs are preferentially deprecated: Beginning in Mac OS X v10.4, the
preferred way to add a timed job is to use a launchd timed job

Trust the OS to prevent open FM file corrupt? I don't think so (
translation: absolutely not)
