Default running fmp 6U and fmp 8.5 on same computer - 04-13-2007 , 01:23 PM

A bad idea or not? I've read that it is not recommended to run more than
one fmp server, but is it the same for the regular versions? I want to
run (well first buy) fmp 8.5 as the normal database with random access
at random times, but about once a semester, i have to run an online
evaluation with hundreds of users at a time, for which I use fmp6U right
now.
I'm trying to keep costs down for my office.

Should work fine (on a Mac, at least - Windows may have some issues due
to the installers stepping on the other version, but I haven't tried).

I have FMP6 and FMP7 on my computer (for local database files only, no
networking). I probably still have FMP4 lurking somewhere on it in case
I need to access an old database.

The problems you run into with multiple installations of FMP are:

1. Trying to run two "servers" at once, since they both need to make
themselves available for connections from other clients. This requires
the use of a fixed port number, and two applications cannot run as
servers on the same port number. (It may be possible to change the port
number for one of them, which would complicate things for clients
accessing it.)

It is OK to have one running as a server and the other running only as a
client or for accessing local files.

2. Running two versions which support the same database file format. If
you had, say, FMP7 and FMP8.5 installed on the same computer, double
clicking a database (".fp7" file) will default to opening in the latest
version (FMP8.5). If you need to open it in FMP7 for some reason (e.g.
ensuring compatibility with other users of the same database who are
still running FMP7) then you have to manually open it with the right
version, or tell the operating system to always open that specific file
in the right version.

This would be an issue when mixing FMP3 and 4.x; FMP5.x and 6; FMP7 and
8.x. We don't know yet whether the "two major versions" pattern will
continue with FMP9.

If you have two FileMaker Pro versions from different "file version
generations" (different filename extension, if you are using them) then
everything works as expected. In your case, your FileMaker Pro 5/6 files
(.fp5) will open in FMP6U, and your FileMaker Pro 7/8 files (.fp7) will
open in FMP8.5.

I can get another network card ... would that work? Can I have fmp6u and
fmp8.5 running off of different network cards?

I do that right now, with the admin running fmp6u, and the other user
running 5.5 to have limited access.

Besides the difficulty of connecting two networkcards into one computer I
don't think you can do that. Filemaker allways uses the same port. I
don'think this port can be changed. But perhaps someone knows a solution to
this. If the port can be changed a simple router/switch would be enough to
create the separate ports.

Keep well, ursus

on MacOSX, you can use differents IP numbers on the same card without
difficulty (just do it).
Afterwards, you must affect one IP to one version of FMP ; that is the
question.

so do I with 2 separate copies of FMP 8 (on a mac, don't know with a
windows machine).
One is used for my utilities, mlttle works I needs all the time, as my
contact's phne number and email adresses. This as to be always
immediatly under hand.
The other is for big data crunching. Some requesting can take tens of
minutes, and I can use the other one during this time.

The only problem is that, with only one licence number, I can't use the
same file on the same time within the 2 FMP.

NB : in the same time, I use FMP 8 runtime for specific needs ; and FMP
6 dev and runtime ; in fact, they are 5 FMP products running together,
without apparent problems...on a bi pro, 2 screens and 6 GB mac)
