Default reports not working like I think they should - 06-11-2005 , 10:04 AM

I am new to Filemaker - just converted my Access database over and
can't generate this report.

The report that prints all of the class rosters for the classes in the
database. I used the column report with summaries and the report looks
OK, but the page breaks don't work. In the trailing summary based on
the class name, I selected the page break after 1 occurance (thinking I
would get a new page for each class). I am not getting any page
breaks! Also, in the body, I selected the alternate colors box (hoping
that each student would alternate colors)and this isn't happening
either. What am I doing wrong?

Alternating colors belong to portals. Portals will not break across
pages in subsummary reports the way you expect.

Re-create your report in the child file. To get alternating colors,
you'll have to do some diddling with a calculation field that will show
a color based on being on an even or odd record.

Also, the critical part of subsummary reports is that they are sorted by
the correct break fields. Sort them by the fields specified in the
subsummary parts to see the report as designed.

I suspect Mary is not using a separate file for this "child" but rather a
separate table in FM7. Can a report belong to a "child table" rather than a
"child file"?

File/table, it's all the same. In FM6, only one table per file. In FM7,
multiple tables per file, but many developers still split their
solutions into separate files for various reasons.

Yes, file and table are equivalent terminology, pick the one that makes
sense given your version and data structure.

I am able to get the body part to alternate colors without any
calculations by just checking the box in the body part setup. This
works fine when I want to print just one class list. I am using
Filemaker 7. This is a nice feature!

I gave up on formatting the report my original way and now have a
script that loops through the courses one at a time and then prints the
class list. This is a much easier solution - I was just thinking like
an access designer, not a filemaker one when I tried to re-create what
I had in my old databse.

I still haven't figured out why the pages won't break - but again, I
found a better way to do the entire report.
