Default report printing question- sliding fields - 12-11-2006 , 09:48 AM

Filemaker 8 Advanced, Mac network. I've been struggling with a report
layout that includes a header with a text field (variable length), then
column headers, followed by a body that includes 25 fields that may or
may not contain data. I've got sliding up set for everything, and
reduce size of enclosing part set for everything. The fields are
sliding properly (after I finally came across the info that all fields
must be formatted to align text "top"). And the body contracts as
expected if there are blank fields in the mix. But the header doesn't
contract. The column headers slide up nicely under the text field,
then there's an ugly blank space down to the beginning of the body
part, meaning the preview header remains as tall as it was while in
layout mode. Can't a Header reduce in size too? Am I doing something
stupid? Again?

Hoping Someone Can Help,

When you say column headers do you mean you're printing this in table
view or are they text labels that appear in your header?

Make sure no objects are 'crossing the line' between the header and the
body. In fact just until you get this straighten out, give yourself a
visible cushion of 10 pixels on either side. Then select all the
objects in the header using the selection tool and set the
sliding/printing options. See if that helps.

To clarify: I'm printing in Form view. The 'column headers' are just
text labels positioned over data fields in the Body section.
I've tried eliminating all extraneous things, just putting two test
fields in the Header and two in the Body, and still the sliding up
works fine, and the Body will shrink, but the Header stubbornly remains
the same. Do I have to put everything into a Body part? It seems like
I've solved this before, but I can't remember how...

Make sure you select ALL the objects (fields, lines, boxes, etc.) that
you want to slide AND all the objects below them in the same Layout
Part. Set these objects to slide up AND make sure the "reduce enclosing
part" option is turned on.
