We use a Filemaker 7 based database for field engineer reporting. The database is located on a dedicated PC in the office and shared to other units in the office although we do have a 2003 SBS server in the building too (this might be relavent). At the end of a call I'd like to be able to complete the details (or log) of the call in to a PDA or Laptop and then synchronise this in to the main database in the office. I could do this using a VPN link in to the office and then using a remote connection to the database or the web-based viewer on the database. The trouble is that often I wont have a broadband connection in the van (not many hotspots around here). Could I have a mirror database on the laptop and then sync it once I am at the office? Also, using a laptop in the van is not very easy - could I use a Palm or Pocket PC instead (with foldout keyboard) - can you sync to a Filemaker database easily? At present I type the details in to Outlook 2003 (which syncs with the office) and then cut/paste in to Filemaker. Anybody out there doing something similar? regards Simon |
