Default relationship drops in file updates - 06-05-2007 , 12:52 AM

2 copies of the same solution exist on a server under individual
directories as below. Different filenames are used to differentiate
different user copies of the same solution.
Structure is a data separation, with files A and C being interface files.
It is not an option to create multiple billing users for a single
solution copy; this is an medical practice accounts solution, and one
doctor owns a copy, and they and their copy may move (institutions…)

Dir PPP
A. user.fp7
B. data.fp7
C. PracticeManager.fp7

Dir GGG
A. GGG user.fp7
B. GGG data.fp7
C. GGG Manager.fp7

The aim is to make changes to A. user.fp7, duplicate (and rename) this,
and replace the existing A. GGG user.fp7 with the update.
When the new A. GGG user.fp7 is opened, requests to locate the B. GGG
data.fp7 and C. GGG Manager.fp7 are complied with.
Once past this, the file References are redefined to the same/correct files

The problem is a few relationships always drop out, and have been for a
coupel of years at every update. The data files are identical; having
written a comparitor to parse tablnames, field names, rels…. There are
no differences.
This makes what should be a simple update, problematic.
In ‘normal’ situations, with one set of filenames, drag & drop replace
is a user capable event; with the problem as iot is, it is impractical
to expect a user to correct the errors, and makes such an update a
developer only rollout.

Any ideas?

regards

Chris

I can't help with the dropping of relationships (I've never found this
to happen on Macs), but I hope by "on a server" you mean FileMaker
Server.

You are not meant to open FileMaker files using the operating system's
filesharing, you're meant to use FileMaker Server (or normal FileMaker)
to host the files and then users open them via the Open Hosts command
in their FileMaker application.

Opening the files directly via the operating system's sharing can cause
corruption and problems.
