Hi,
I am having problems defining relationships between two file. I have e
defined the relationship and I have defined the field with the relationship
Name and the incoming relationship field, and still nothing. What else is
there that I should be doing that I am NOT doing.
A Relationship requires matching data on both sides to work.
Example:
File1 with Field1, defined as text with the value of "Smith"
File2 with Field2, defined as text with the value of "Smith"

If the relationship is set up in File1 using Field1::Field2 and the value is
the same on both sides of the relationship matching data from File2 can be
pulled across into File1 using the relationship.

Now a field can be placed on the layout (in layout mode) in File1 to display
other related data from that record in File2. There is a pulldown menu at
the top of the box that appears after a field is placed onto the layout.
Change the pulldown to reflect the relationship and then choose the desired
related field.

Maybe if you could better explain what you are trying to accomplish the
group could provided a detailed explanation.

Hi Charlie,

what you are trying to do is called a look-up and is really a very basic
technique, which is covered extensively in the help file and printed
documentation. I assume that's the reason for the lack of response.

You should first create the relationship between File B and File A. Open
Define relationships in File B, create a new Relationship and select File A.
Select the "supplier ID" field both in File A and File B as the match Field.
Make sure that your "Supplier ID" fields in both File B and A are of the
same type, i.e. number or text.

Now, go to "Define Fields" in File B, create a Field "Supplier_name", click
on "options" and select "looked-up value" from the auto-enter tab. From the
pull-down menu, select the relationship you have just created and select the
field which contains the name of the supplier in File A. Close "Define
Fields", put the newly created field on a layout, create a new record, type
in a valid "Supplier_ID" and voila : the name of the supplier is
automatically entered.

Alternatively, after you have created the relationship, you can also
directly put the related field "Supplier_name" from file A on a layout in
file B, as Michael Stout has pointed out. This has the advantage that the
field changes dynamically, i.e. as soon as the field is modified in File A,
while with a look-up, you would need to re-enter "Supplier ID" to force a
re-lookup.

The rest is up to you, I really suggest you start reading the documentation.

Regards,

Peter

OK here goes,
I have 1 file called 'Suppliers' we'll call this "File A" this contains
the
names, phone number, E-mail addresses, Web pages, and any other data on
this
supplier, each Supplier has a unique Number. Now I have a 2nd file call
'Purchases' we'll call this "File B" which contains data on the Item I
have
purchased.

What I want to do is input data on Purchase items in "File B" including
the
Supplier's unique Number and have all of the data on this 'Supplier' fill
in
the required fields of "File B". Now I am asking you for help to
establish
the relationship of 1 field only, and once I learn this technique for 1
relationship then I can do the rest.

Charlie
