Hello folks,

I am trying to set up a number of scientific labels for spider specimens and
one thing I would really like to be able to do is convert gender field
contents like "Male" and "Female" to their universal symbols. Is this
possible in FileMaker. I can't see where one might be able to do this.

Thanks for any advice,

Dave

Hi Dave,

A couple of options spring to mind...

1. If you have a standard font that contains the symbols in their library
AND the font is installed on ALL the machines used to view the db you could
create a calc field that is formatted to that font that returns the
appropriate character to show the symbol if the key combination to get the
symbol isn't too complicated.

2. You could use a graphic for each and a repeating global container field
to use as a library in a the same file prefs file. Paste the male symbol in
the first repetition and the female symbol in the second. Then use a couple
of calc fields, the first (a number result) to return the position of the
symbol... 1 if the gender is male and 2 if the gender is female. Another
calc field (a container result) will use the GetRepetition() function and
the result of the position calc to pull the appropriate graphic.

The downside to these solutions is that it is tricky to perform searches on
these fields.

Oh, rub it in why don't you! Think you a clever chappy, do you? Think you
are better than us? Well, I will have you know that we of the
great-southern-hemishpere expect a full and detailed report! Then we will
see!

I thought I had Webko convinced that he should come too at one stage...but
alas he declined :-(. Don't know about clever, but I have a feeling I am
going to be a VERY warm chappy soon. If I can find anyone who will listen
while I'm there, I will run the Southern Hemisphere DevCon concept past them
and mention the balmy winter weather you are experiencing ;-).

As far as giving the detailed report....I have set up a spot on my site that
I will use as a diary... http://nicheit.com.au/devcon2003/, unless of course
I can't get to a network connection or am just having too much fun ;-)

Andrew
