Hello,
Apologies, the first post went out before I could finish it.
If I run "Status Current System Version" from FMPro 5 in Windows XP,
it returns "5.10"
If I run it in Vista, it returns "6.0"
Can any one say what that means? Does that effectively discriminate
between those operating systems?
Thanks,
Bill

It seems odd, as you say, but if I were you I wouldn't bother, if it works
as it should. You know though, that FileMaker Inc has not yet - to my
knowledge : I may be out of date - released fully FileMaker on Vista. See
their site.
Now, if you really wishes to go further to see if Vista miraculously made
your v5 a v6, just look it it has the new features of v6, which I doubt.

Hi Remi,
Later I looked up "Status Current System Version" and indeed it does
refer to the operating system, not the Filemaker version.
The solution I'm deploying on Vista seems to behave all right; there
are reasons, though, that I want to know if it's there and
not on <=XP. It is important in Vista not to deploy on "Program
Files". Vista will make each user a copy of the files and store
them in their "Virtual Store". This appears to create a duplicate
system for each user where one could create Invoice 13 for John Smith
on April 7
and another user could create Invoice 13 for Yvette Mimieaux on April
7. Don't know who else has stumbled on this arch mischief yet!

Yes, it should do. The Status(Current Sytstem Version) returns the
version of the operating system the computer is running. You can use
that number to determine which version of Windows (or Mac OS) the
database is running on ... the only problem will be if there is a
"Windows XP 6.0", but I have no idea about that (although I doubt
they're up to version 6 of Vista already).

FileMaker 5 of course is quite old now and won't know anything about
Vista specifically. All the function does is read the version text from
the appropriate part of the system's memory.

Bill,

The value returned by this function corresponds to what you'd get running
"System Information" (Start--> All Programs--> Accessories--> System Tools)
in Windows. Sorry, I don't know offhand the corresponding path to this tool
in Vista, if it exists.

Some other users speculated on FileMaker Vista compatibility. FileMaker just
released FileMaker Pro 8.5v2 which is promised to be Vista compatible.
