Hi all,

did I miss anything or is sliding within portals just not possible?

If so, this does limit the usage of portals significantly. I use them
since it does permit to add new related records easily, but I do have to
create special layouts from the other end of the relation in order to
use list view ans sliding over there.
Sliding of Fields only works in Preview Mode or when the Layout is printed,
but you shouldn't use Portals for printing anyway - they weren't designed
for it. You're always best to print from the other side of the Relationship.

Also, the size of a portal row will not shrink. But the portal will
shrink to only print the rows that a related record.

That's not much of a help. What I would need is the shrink of the portal

What's wrong about the idea that portals might be helpful for printing?
What's wrong about shrinking portal rows?

Thanks for the confirmation that it can't be done for current versions.
But I do not understand why it the can not be designed for it.
I'd be perfectly happy if text fields in FM would just *expand* to fit
the data instead of having to shrink to fit.

No need to pile any additional programming burden into portal rows,
thank you, printing from the child table is entirely adequate. Too much
programming would be required to not only decide how many portal rows
to show for a printout, but sizing them properly. It's not a trivial
thing.

A list view from the child table is designed to print. It's trivial to
get there (GTRR anyone?) so why such a fuss?

Besides, when you have large numbers of child records, a portal is just
too poor a performer. Not to mention they can't be easily sorted or
subsummarized.

If you have a layout type that is designed for what you want, use it.
Don't spend a lot of time trying to get a data display object to be a
printing object. That's not what it's for.

With FMP 9 and later, you can anchor the protal to the top and to the
bottom. The portal gets more rows as the windows gets taller.

This has no effects on printing, though. You're better off printing a
list layout of the related records.

I have a limited number of child reports only, and I do have a fixed
sort order, a dedicated sort field.

If you have a layout type that is designed for what you want, use it.

Ok, so I'll use portals for data entry only.

Sliding always has some annoying surprised, and when you managed to
bypass the flaws in one version, it will be broken within the next
version again...

Martin
Martin,
Not sure this is your problem but I found if you mark the fields in a
portal to slide up then it did not work.
But click in the shaded area of the portal and then the whole row of
fields is enclosed in one selected box, if this is then marked for
sliding the bottom of the portal will slide up to the last entry.
(providing the portal is big enough for all the records of course)
Be careful to right click in the outer box and not one of the fields
when going to " Set Sliding /Printing".
