Default Question about Filemaker Server Client configuration - 12-07-2005 , 01:36 PM

Hi All,

Tell me if this is possible. I have a database of images and I perform
some image processing functions on these images and store the result
back into filemaker database. I am using some third party plugins to do
the image processing stuff. My plugins use some speacial libraries to
perform the image processing functions that I need. Till here
everything is fine and My database works completely fine as a desktop
application.

Now I want to share this database over a network, so that some body can
access it from a client machine. What I want to do is, to have a
flexibility that whenever a user enters an image in the database, it
comes to the server, gets processed and displays the result back to the
client. In short I want all the calculations to be done on the server
machine and not on the client machine. The libraries that I am using
for the image processing calculations cannot be used on the client
machines without a license. Hence the difficulty.

Please tell me if this is possible. Any suggestions will be helpful.
Also should I go in for ODBC connectivity for this kind of database
sharing? Please Help.

Thanks,
Abhi

In FMP6 - I don't know enough FM7-8 - this seems not possible.
FMS55 is just a server of files but do not perform FMP functions. Those
have to be done on a client machine of the network.
Then each client PC must have the same plugins etc. that you have on
your own, if you want them to perform tasks that you do yourself..
FMS55 as such does not hold any plugin.
Maybe someone more accustomed to FM7-8 may tell us if that sort of
behaviour also hold with them or if something has changed.

But maybe I am wrong there even in FMP6, if you setup a more complex
design.
Say you make all the files 'able' (theoretically, if the plugins are
there) to perform certain actions, and put them on the PC Server. Then
you may forbid those actions to be done on any of the workstations
except yours, while letting them sending some info on the host, say on
reserved normal fields in a one record 'parameters' file, that you, and
you only, would gather to perform your task. Then make a similar setup
to send back your results to all.
It may be achievable that way.
Please keep us posted.
PS : you may share with me more - privately.

Hi Remi,

Can you please elaborate on how can I forbid some actions to be done on
any client workstations and how can I send the info back to the host? I
tried doing this. I created two database files. The first one, lets
say, "InputDB.fp7" contains just the Input image and the second one,
lets say, "ProcessDB.fp7" contains a reference to InputDB and a
container for the output image after proccesing. The problem here is
Filemaker crashes everytime I try and reference InputDB in ProcessDB.
But when I open the ProcessDB again, I have the processed image in the
output container. I am not able to understand what is happening !!

Thanks,
Abhi
