Default Question #2-Get organise - 11-04-2006 , 10:40 PM

Hi my again

I'm switch my solution from FM6 to 8.5, I use 12 files now with many layout
and many scripts.

I notice in FM8.5 when using tables, all the layout are there, listed one
after another..... at the end I will have about 100 layouts in my list, that
will be a pain in the a$$ to move thru that
same thing for scripts.... I will have more then 300 scripts.

Are there a way to keep layout/script with specific table or a way to keep
them sort !??!

Thank you

JF

I haven't used FileMaker 7 or 8, but as far as I understand it you can
choose to leave your solution as separate files if you prefer. You
don't have to stick them all in one file.

After some experience with FMP 7 & 8 database solutions for various
purposes for different organizations, including migration from 4/5/6 to
7/8, I have these suggestions:

Redesign the tables and relationships to use the features of FMP 8.

Go through all the layouts to delete those you do not need.

Redesign layouts to more efficiently display info from related tables.

Write scripts to perform desired functions and go to needed report
layouts, then back to the "main" layout after the script is complete.

Provide pushbuttons on the layouts to call appropriate scripts and to
navigate to other significant layouts.

Reorganize the layout menu to group layouts in an orderly way, make
blank layouts to serve as labeled separators in the layouts menu, and
uncheck the layouts than are called by scripts and navigation buttons.
You will end up with a much smaller layout menu in the Browse mode, and
what is left will be logically organized. You will still be able to see
the full layout menu in the Layout mode.

Also, limit the ability of users to delete records, in order to avoid
the dreadful possibility of doing an inadvertent "Delete All Records."
Establish normal user accounts and privileges that show editing menus
only. Write a script that will delete one record at a time, with
appropriate dialog warnings. This way, a user can delete one record by
use of the script, but can not inadvertently do Delete All.

If you take this step, you also need to provide scripts to enable the
user to go to the various modes: Find, Browse, Preview, as the Editing
menus only leave the mode change menus unavailable.

There are white papers on the FileMaker web site that discuss these
kinds of questions in more detail.

Or you might have a look into : http://www.jonathanstark.com/downloads.php
and look for: Managing the Relationship Graph with Squids

This explains a different and more readable way to set up your graphs. Only
helpfull with lots of table-occurences (TO's) like with your solution.
