When opening new files FileMaker usually tries to use the same
password
as
the parent file, so you might need to check the Passwords, Access
Priviledges, etc. to make sure all the files are set-up correctly
there
too.

Well, that brings up another issue I don't understand. I haven't set
up
any passwords for any files and yet FMP sometimes asks me for a
password.

I thought somewhere I read the reason for this but now I can't find
it.

Files converted from older versions of FileMaker are sometimes given a
default password - it depends on which versions you're converting to /
from.

Thanks, do you know how to get rid of it?

I haven't really looked into the passwords / privileges options of newer
versions of FileMaker. You might be able to delete it (try on a backup file
first) or at least change it to a blank password.

Helpfull Harry )

The thing is, these files never did have passwords.

Filemaker 7 and later creates a default account "Admin" with a blank
password and full access whenever you create a new file.

So after FMP 7 there'e no way to bypass the annoying dialog box wanting
a password?

And why does it only ask on certain files?

And why is the login name mine and not Admin?

Sorry, I'm just really confused.

Of course there is, if you are able to open the file with full access.
Two ways to go:

In the file option, you can tell the file to use a certain account name
and password all the time unless it is opened while the shift or alt key
is pressed.

Further, FMP will not ask for a password the file that opens your file
because it's related have the same account name and password.

Okay, I'll change it to Admin so it'll open without a prompt. But if I
never gave it a password in the first place, you're saying that after
FMP 7 it will ask for one anyway?

Sorry, I'm not sure what you're saying here. Going back to my original
problem (which I've yet to figure out how to fix) I have an index that
opens all the files in this particular group. Opening a file off this
layout works fine but opening a file from the finder brings up the
password window. I'm guessing you're saying that's how it should work
and if you are, I understand.
