Default Printing Labels in FMP 8 - 04-22-2007 , 03:56 AM

I'm just coming back to Filemaker after many years away. (The last
time I used it was probably version 3 or so.) I've recently migrated
a 7000+ record database from Now Contact to FMP. The import went
(mostly) fine, but my issue is printing mailing labels.

If I have a partial sheet of labels (like Avery 5160) how can I
dictate to FMP which label to start printing on? The only "solution"
I found online requires creating a fairly involved script to add an
appropriate number of blank records before starting to print the
record(s) I want to print (this positions the first actual record on
the first available label). Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck
creating with FMP's Scriptmaker to create such a script.

Any suggestions would be geatly appreciated.

Software: Filemaker Pro 8
Operating System: Mac OS 10.4

It is not difficult or time-consuming to create the extra blank records
manually.

Thanks for the response...it's not the blank records I had trouble
creating...it's the script that prompts for the number of blank
records to automatically include.

Or...I just can't figure out how to manually integrate the blank
records into a "fond records" list with the one or two actual records
that I need to print labels for...

Hope that clarifies my situation.

TIA

I beg to differ, when you are printing several tables, several times a day
it might actualy be far easier to script this. Basically this is the way.

You know how many labels there are on one sheet (A)
You know how many labels you are going to print (B)
The function MOD returns the number of labels one your last sheet. MOD ( B ;
A ) (C)
Now you let the script calculate the difference between A and C
This is the number of empty labels remaining. And you will know if they will
fit on a half used sheet.

Now when you already have used a sheet partialy it is a simple matter of
turning this around.
Start with a dialog box. Manualy enter the number of labels already used on
your first sheet.
Let the script create this amount of empty records, sort them to be the
first to be printed.
The best way to get this properly working is using a completely separate
table just for the printing process.
Find the records you want to print. Import the date in the printing table.
Add the amount of empty records you need
print
after printing completely empty the table.

All this can easily be scripted.

Keep well, Ursus

Personally I just use full sheets of labels and avoid this problem
altogether. )

Sheets with a few labels left can also be used on the end of a print
run "upside down" to use up left-overs. Other left-over labels can be
used for other things (eg. handwritten labels on file folders).

You can also peel the unused labels off of one sheet and stick them
into gaps on another. **BUT** make sure they are properly stuck down
before feeding them through a printer again - trying to get a stuck
label out of the insides of a printer can be a messy and / or expensive
problem to fix.

If only I had that luxury. Often I have to print one or two labels at
a time for invoices, items sold, etc. so that would leave ALOT of
"other uses" I'd have to find for them.

I'm using a old tank of a Laserwriter (16/600) and luckily, I've never
had a problem with labels coming doslodged from partially used sheets
(regardless of which side I feed through first).

You might think about getting a specialized label printer that does one
at a time from a roll of label stock. I have not personally used one,
but I see them advertised.

I looked into two different ones, but neither sounded very reliable.
Besides, the last thing I need is one more device on my desk. :-)

I found a suggested script online to automatically insert a number of
blank records I can define -- unfortunately, it looks like it was
written for an older version of FMP. I can't import it with
scriptmaker, and the actions and syntax in the script I found are
different enough from FMP 8 that I can't create a similar script in on
my machine.

They are usually small and use rolls of labels rather than sheets. I've
never used one either so can't vouch for how good or otherwise they
might be.

The only real change that I know of has been the Status functions that
are now called Get, eg. Status(CurrentRecordID) is now called
Get(CurrentRecordID).

Partially used sheets are fine - it's when you re-stick labels from one
sheet onto another that problems can occur. If they aren't re-stuck
down properly they can peel off as the sheet goes around the rollers,
and in a laser printer this can be a bit of a disaster when they get
stuck to the drum (the heat cause all sorts of extra difficulty) ...
believe me, I have managed to fix one laser printer after someone did
this, but it ain't easy or pretty. \
