I'm using FMPA 8, but this also happens with earlier versions, and I've
never understood why. If I preview a printed form in Preview mode, I
am often whisked away from the record I am currently viewing to the
first record in the found set. If I stay in Browse mode, I am left on
the appropriate record. Why does FileMaker do this? More to the
point, what can I do to cause FM to show me the record I want?

That's what it's meant to do. Preview Mode shows you what will be
printed, therefore it automatically goes back to the first record in
the Found Set so that it can display the first page of the printout
correctly. When you exit back to Browse Mode it simply displays that
first record.
