Default PDF in FM 8 - 09-07-2005 , 04:21 PM

Hi Guys,

Is there a way to improve the quality of the pdf FM creates with the
new Export to PDF feature. I have some image backgrounds in my layouts
that show up in very poor quality inside the pdf. I am using FM 8 for
Windows. When I print the records, they show up beatifully in the
color printer.

Thanks,
Nando

Very interesting to know the answer. I specially am interested in the
quality of the PDF file to upgrade to FM8.

Don't know, but maybe there is a option setting within FM8 to set the
PDF file dpi-setting. Default settings to generate PDF files, often is
only 72 dpi. To get proper printing for images, at least about 300 dpi
is necessary.
When you are using good quality images within the records, I can imagine
the downsampling to only 72 dpi do give poor quality.

The image quallity look more like a highly compressed jpg than a
lowering of resolution. Lots of jpg artifacts. I have not seen any
thing to set the quality of the pdf.

A pity. (And ashamed for Filemaker).
Seems not the functionality it should be, no upgrade for now.

I was at a user group meeting last night and saw this in action. I don't
know about the jpg artifacts, but the size of FM8's PDFs is pretty huge
compared to what you get from Mac OS X's built-in capabilities, or from
Acrobat Distiller. So the functionality is not yet what we'd like.

BUT: you can assign all the sorts of permissions that are available in
Acrobat 7 Pro, or so it looked like, so not a total loss.

For me, though, there's so much in FM8 advanced that I ordered my copy
last night as soon as I got back home. My only real complaint: 8 is what
7 should have been.

Were the layouts list views that included background graphics, or did
the PDF'd layouts otherwise include graphics?

We did two tests. One was to make a PDF of a list of text fields (in
List view). The other had a couple of small graphics, but nothing
complex. In both cases, about the smallest PDF you could create was
something over 100KB. Native OS X PDFs were quite a bit smaller (I don't
recall how much).

A developer at the meeting had heard that FM8's PDFs were significantly
larger than either Acrobat Pro or OS X; I think he mentioned something
like an order of magnitude larger. Our experience was similar.

Also, when we enlarged the simple graphic, its edges were pretty jaggy;
something you'd expect of a compressed PDF, but certainly not from a
file the size of what FM8 put out.

My version of Advanced shipped today. Next week when I get it, I'll run
some of my own tests. But at this point, given that I've got Acrobat 7
Pro on my machines, I suspect I'll continue to create PDFs outside of
FM8.
