I have a solution that is up and running nicely for about 4 years. However,
about once every six months or so, all of the hosted files come up as
paused. I can get around the problem by un-pausing the files (26 of them) or
close and re-open them. No more problems for six months.

Has anyone else had this happen? Could it be somehow tied to the backups?
Doesn't the backup need to pause the files? Can the backup procedure get
stuck before it is able to un-pause?
