Default password problem - 02-13-2010 , 02:20 PM

I am using FMP 10 on Windows XP.
I recently found an older file, probably done in FMP 7. It was last used by
me in 2003. I am trying to open it but not get past the password. I have
tried my usuals but have not had any luck. I have tried admin and no
password but nothing there either. It is not crucial that I open this file
but it irks me that I can not get into something I spent a lot of time
working on. Am I just out of luck with this, as I guess is the case? Or is
there something I can do to access a file without the password?

Stephen,

In the past this topic has been dicussed multiple times. Several users
complained asbout this behaviour. In the end it was the consensus you should
open the file with the version it was created with, remove all protection
and try again. (such as passwords, start-up scripts, user menu's etc ) Even
this could leave you with a file that remains firmly locked. In which case
you would have to export the data in the old version, rebuilt the file with
fmp10 en import. Which would also give you an opportunity to use new
techniques.

As to access without using a password.... If such a trick would exist it
wouldn't be very safe

In looking through some old notes, I found how to access the files and will
pass it on here in case someone else has a similar problem.

I had written down that I should keep the username blank, and use a certain
word as my password. I recognized that word as one I often used but could
not get it to work with several of my typical usernames. But it worked.
Keeping the username blank and using the password did the trick. I last
used the file in January of 2003 and would guess that would predate
FileMaker 7. But I was able to open it with FMP 10 today.
