Default Page-break headaches w/portals - 06-16-2005 , 05:51 PM

Hello FMP Gurus!

I am experiencing a few simple but puzzling layout issues to do with
page breaks and spacing of records.

Problem 1

When I make a report form that presents records one after the other down
the page, FMP doesnıt generally break a single record in two at the
bottom of a page, continuing the rest of it on the following page.
Generally I like that but is there a way of allowing a record to split
between pages and if so, can you prevent it from splitting a single
LINE of text in half, with the bottoms of the letters being orphaned on
the second page?

Problem 2
In a layout where I have a portal with six repetitions displaying
records in a way similar to what I just described, I canıt figure out to
prevent records from being cut in half at the bottoms of pages. I donıt
see any way of preventing this? Worse yet, it is splitting in mid-line,
as Iıve just described, which is clearly unacceptable.

Problem 3
In the same layout, in the portal window I have a sliding/shrinking
text box that makes it necessary to make the portal window taller than
Iıd like to have to be when I print out records. But the ³Reduce size
of Enclosing Part² option doesnıt seem to have an effect on the portal
window size, so I get large gaps in my print-out. Any remedy?

Speedy help would be very appreciated!

Albert

As far as I'am aware your problems cannot be solved directly.

Problem 1 can be solved by creating a calculation field. Correctly putting
all data in it, formatting etc. then calculate the amount of lines in that
field and truncating it at the right line, putting the rest in a second
field.

Problem2. Portals can print, but were never meant to print selected data in
the way you need. I have solved this by creating (extensive) export scripts.
Formatting the text as htm, this way I have all the text-options I want.
Hten open the exported-file in Word and print through that.

Problem3 is related to Problem2, Portals were never inteded to be printed as
a large data-structure. Solution is therefor the same, script a export

Perhaps some other real wise-guy/girl has a better solution
