Default Open files? Closed files? in 8.0/8.5 - 10-18-2006 , 12:35 PM

Hi there-

I'm finally going to upgrade my company's version from 5.5/6 to 8.0/8.5
and so I'm learning a lot.

One thing that is currently a mystery is the question of when exactly a
file is open and when it is closed.

I have done testing with the design functions that give me a list of
open files, and often I can't get files to close, even with a blank
layout showing, and the use of the Close File script step.

Do I care?

I see the benefit of separating the windows from the files--I've been
trying to stop my users from closing files for years...now it looks
like I don't have to worry about it. But now I am a little worried
about whether a file is actually closed when I close it. Should I
worry?

Any insight welcomed and appreciated.

Paul,

I don't think you need to worry. With 5.5 a related file was open when the
relation was in use, but the file only closed when you actively closed it.
When the application closed or when you closed it by hand or by script.

With 7 and later, a related file is opened hidden. It might look opened to
you, but it will not show up in the menu > window (Bottom part). It really
is not open for using it's layouts, only for use internaly with the
relation. Filemaker manages this itself and doesn't require your help.

When integrating tables into one file you will not have to worry at all,
since all tables are managed within one file. When I used the older
filemaker I had many files working together. Whenever possible I have now
integrated them into one and am very pleased with it.
