Default ODBC FAQ? Filemaker to Access - 10-14-2005 , 03:50 PM

I need to share some Filemaker data with MS Access.

I think I've done the right things:

in Filemaker:
made sure plugin for local data access companion is checked.
for each file, Sharing, checked Local Data Access Companion as well.
All the files are on my own machine, no network connectivity or
multi-user sharing required.

Then, I open the control panel, Data Sources (ODBC) admin thing, and I
get lost.

The DSN file that gets created is empty save for the line with the
Driver in it.
I can't even figure out if I should be configuring "System" or "user"
or "file" DSN tabs? all, one, some?
The documentation on both sides stinks big time.

tips? tricks? a "for dummies" document somewhere?

ok, bad form, but sheeze...
nice to know you have to have the files OPEN in Filemaker..

So, I can import some of my tables now into Access.
BUT, some have "too many indexes open" in a file that doesn't exist
(VxpsdfTEMP0001) except probably as a temp file.
I've gone and unchecking the indexing on fields to get under 33, but
it's not helping. Do I have to close, then reopen the file, after
eliminating the indexes?
I'll bet I do!!
;-)

Yeah. It's a PITA. The documentation is crappy and counterintuitive. I
had trouble with cryptic errors too. I feel your pain.

At one point I just gave up and completely uninstalled the Filemaker
drivers, deleted the DSN, and started over. Once it finally got it
working, though, it's pretty solid.

The error you're getting might not even have anything to do with the
indexes. Are you able to find the temp file on your computer? Maybe you
could (back it up just in case) and delete it. It's probably easier to
redo the DSN than try to troubleshoot it. Also, if you forget to open
the Filemaker file and it gives you an error, the best bet is to just
shut everything down and try again.

Give us an update, please on what happens next.
