Default numberformat - 03-12-2007 , 04:54 AM

strange, when I enter a number f.e. '0,125' I get '125,00' when I
format the cel as 'decimal' in stead of 'standard notation' (I don't
know the exact english equivalents, I' Dutch). I cannot enter 0,125 (the
',' being a decimal seperator, not 'thousands')
That is odd, because I want to use these setting because of the
possibilities of fixing the decimal positions, valuta symbol etc.

the odd thing is that it works fine in another (test)file, so my
conclusion is that it has to do with this particular file. So, could it
have to do with the fact that I am using the
ConditionalValues.fp5-demofile from Nightwing as a template?
(It also has this annoying 'nightwing' menu as a replacement for the
scripting menu.)
probably there are some hidden options in filemaker, which I have not
yet discovered.

Sure thing there are hidden things. Goto define fields, find the field that
is protesting. It should read: MyField, Number. And nothing else, if there
is any more text in the fieldslist, highlight the field, select options.
Remove almost all the checks. Only the checks on Validation > Allow user to
override, AND the check on Storage > Automatically create indexes should be
ON.

But remember that when you change anything it also might change something
really important in the original solution. If there are any validations set,
there is a reason for it. Try to work your understanding up a little so you
can built you own solutions. That way you have total control and total
understanding. This might take some time, but FileMaker is not very
difficult to learn and you should be on your way pretty shortly.

Keep well, Ursus

Yes, a file remembers its native number format from its creation.
Evidently your file sees the ',' as a thousands separator.
If I remember correctly a clone of the file will adopt your system's
number format, so you could try cloning the template before use.

I found what the problem was: it had to do with the systemsettings in
filesettings. there you can choose to keep the filesetting or adopt the
systemsettings. ticking system solved it

I know it takes some time, but I'm not a novice anymore, just rusty, and
.... the difference to version 8 is quite big (from 5)
Most thing I'll be able to figure out in time, but it helps if others
can give you a shortcut every now and then.
