Perhaps what you mean is that you need to "export records" this
function can be found under the file menu. It allows you to get
information out in a standard format. Otherwise I don't think
FileMakers copy and paste function works for more than one field at a
time.

You can actually get a whole entire record if no fields are selected.

I am not talking about exporting, I need to copy a field and paste it
into another application. So I want to copy a filemaker field and
paste it into Word or another application.

Copy the contents of the field in FileMaker then use the "Send Event"
script step an apple script to do the paste in the other application.

If you have Apple OS X your are probably lucky and can use Applescript
or Automator.

Windows???

If you are looking at a mail-merge situation (eg creating numerous Word
documents from Filemaker records) then you might look at exporting from
Filemaker to Excel and then mail-merging into Word with the Excel data.
I have been doing this to transfer data between MS Access 97 and Word
for several years and am in the middle of converting from Access to FM8
so will need to work out mail-merging myself soon.

Sorry if I am being too simplistic here. If you are in Windows and you
want to copy data from a specific field in an open FMP database to an
open Word file, for example, then "do the usual": drag'n'drop if you
are good with the mouse or, if you're like me select the field, type
Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C click in the appropriate place in the Word file and type
Ctrl-V. On the other hand you may be talking about automating this
process somehow and there I have nothing to say.
