Default Multiple Windows similar to Access Subforms - 12-20-2006 , 09:04 PM

Hello,

I have been asked to create a database with three tables - Organization,
Location, and Contacts. The organization can have multiple locations and
each location can have multiple contacts. The relationships will be
easy to create. However, my client is currently using Access so when he
displays an organization, other views automatically appear containing
the related locations and contacts. He can then scroll through each
record on either the location or contact form. I believe Access calls
this view "Subforms".

I have never seen this type of layout on FileMaker - is there a way that
when an organization is viewed, that their corresponding locations and
contacts can appear on the same layout and my customer can scroll
through the records (not a portal)

Thanks for any help you can give.

Without knowing Access, I think you can do what you look for in FM either
with a portal (why did you say "not a portal" ? : it is a widely used and a
very powerful technique) or with value lists (there are several options).

Yep, Access' sub-forms are basically portals, and from the explanation
portals are exactly what is needed here (along with the appropriate
relationship and other tables).

In the portal definition dialog box, you can set it to display 1 row
and display a scroll bar which may be what you're looking for.

The vertical height of that one row portal would have to be fairly big
for a scrollbar to display properly.
