I'm building a dispatch system for my freight brokerage. In the past
we had seperate databases for customers, carriers and bookings. Is
there an inherent advantage or disadvantage to consolidating these
files in to one file? I'd prefer to make one big database because I
think it would simplify backups.

With Filemaker 7 you can have it all. Multiple tables all in one file.
If you're already using it, there's no reason no to consolidate.
