I am receiving the following error:
"? (?)" is modifying these items. You cannot use these items until "?
(?)" is finished.
My first thought was that someone had not logged out of FileMaker and
kept it open while updating records. So, I kicked out all the users
from the system and now I'm getting the error on the "Account and
Privileges" screen, which only a two administrators ever access. As a
result, we cannot update user profiles or add new users. It seems that
I may have to stop and restart the FileMaker Server, but I do not want
to do that without understanding the underlying problem. So, if anyone
is familiar with this message, do you know what it is referring to?
Also, what do I need to do to avoid this problem in the future?

I had that error message once before. Restarting the Server solved it
without any adverse affects (no file corruption).

As far as cause...I don't know, but I suspect it had to do with working
on the file structure while other users were logged on.

You didn't mention what version of FM you are using.
But in FMP6, one could modify scripts, relationships, layouts, but not the
field definitions, while the server was up and running with people using the
files. I did that all the time either from a workstation of the LAN or from
remote using pcAnywhere or directly the (very slow in FMP6) host via IP
opening. I never got any complaints from the clients. As for touching the
file definitions if FMS was running, all other users had to close the
solution, then from your workstation you could have access to the field
definitions and proceed to changes. Another method was, of course, to stop
FMS. If you wanted to move, copy or add a file to the solution, you had to
close FMS. But for backup you could schedule automatic backups while FMS and
users were in operation, as an excellent function of FMS was to the 'pause'
the running users, do the backup of the files in another place of the local
disks of the server machine - not a remote one, I never understood why not -
and start FMS again for the users : from the user point of view they were
just stopped doing their work during the (quick, say 2mn for a 200 Mb
solution) backup operation, then continue when released.
I don't know if all this is still true with FM7-8.
