Default Maximum Files for Conversion - 12-18-2005 , 06:36 AM

[ FMD7 / WXP ]

Finding myelf with a lot of time on my hands following surgery, I
decided to tackle converting an FM6 database to FM7.

This database maintains information on every town in Vermont, mainly
for purposes of generating pages for my website. Since its inception,
it has grown to 40 related files as I gradually added information.

As I have done a number of times in the past, I selected all of the
files and dragged them to the FMD7 icon.

I was presented with an error saying something to the effect that
Windows could not access the device, file or drive; I may not have
specific permission to use it. Every FM7 file on my machine opens just
fine, so what's up?

Restarted. Same thing.

Returned to earlier Restore Point, thinking maybe that last download a
few minutes ago may have screwed something up. Same thing.

Ran various registry fixer-uppers, each finding different problems to
repair (as usual). Same thing.

Re-installed FMD7. Same thing.

The last time I tried the drag-and-drop, I accidentally selected only
one file of the forty, and the conversion went ahead. Thus, I stumbled
on the fact that there is apparently a limit to how many files FM7 can
convert at one shot.

Pulling the least important files out of the folder one at a time
(those whose relationships can most easily be fixed later), I finally
got to the point where the entire dragged group would convert. 29
files.

Twenty-nine, yes. Thirty, no.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this heretofore unknown (at least to
me) limitation, or did I discover something new? Just curious; I doubt
I will be converting this many files at one shot ever again.

Matt

I don't know of any such limits, but you are obviously having trouble
with it. Seems to me there is really no benefit to converting all 40
files in one batch, other than the ease of doing a big batch all at
once. You should be able to take your extra 11 unprocessed files and
process them as a batch separate from the first 29 without any
complications.

Never mind.

I have been informed that I should be dragging the unopened folder onto
the FM icon, not a selected group of files.
