i could not find anything in the FAQS or FileMaker website, but perhaps i am missing something... my dilemma is that i have aprox 180 fields that i wish to view in one table view (there are idiosyncratic reasons for this...mostly stemming from end users desire to have an excel-ish interface) however, table view does not display all the fields although form view does...i read there is some default layout width in fm5, i currently develop in FM7, does this still apply? is it modifiable? what are the limits in FM in terms of number of columns? are there workarounds other than breaking out into more than one layout? any thoughts most appreciated! thanks, sg OS=MS XP VER=7.3 |

According to 'Filemaker 8 Functions and Script Desk Reference' (Scott Love, Steve Lane, Bob Bowers), the maximum layout size is 121 inches by 121 inches. Nothing about number of columns, and my guess is that they would just adjust to the layout size. Try it. I'd be very surprised if there were any difference on this point between 7 and 8. Having said that, you might consider using repeating fields for emulating Excel files.Repeaters are generally deprecated, and that's because they are commonly mis-used in place of separate tables. But they do have some unique and valid uses, and I've found Excel emulation to be one of them. But, with some caveats: you can't easily connect specific cells of a repeater to other fields, be they repeaters or not. Searches won't work they way you want, or expect. They can be memory-inefficient. -- John Weinshel Datagrace Vashon Island, WA (206) 463-1634 Certified For Filemaker 8 Certified For Filemaker 7 "MaximalVariance" <StephenTGallagher (AT) gmail (DOT) com> wrote in message news:1165266763.277988.226920 (AT) j44g2000cwa (DOT) googlegroups.com... i could not find anything in the FAQS or FileMaker website, but perhaps i am missing something... my dilemma is that i have aprox 180 fields that i wish to view in one table view (there are idiosyncratic reasons for this...mostly stemming from end users desire to have an excel-ish interface) however, table view does not display all the fields although form view does...i read there is some default layout width in fm5, i currently develop in FM7, does this still apply? is it modifiable? what are the limits in FM in terms of number of columns? are there workarounds other than breaking out into more than one layout? any thoughts most appreciated! thanks, sg OS=MS XP VER=7.3 |
