Default LW 8500 not duplexing - 05-17-2007 , 09:12 AM

We have two duplexing printers which are essential to our daily
activities. We print two-sided forms from FileMaker Pro all day long.
One printer is an HP 4200 and the other is an Apple LaserWriter 8500,
one of Apple's last printers and a good one. We also have some
individual Canon Pixma USB color printers attached to individual
computers.

Earlier this week we got a Toshiba 220L copier with the networked
printing/scanning option. Ever since we loaded the printer drivers for
the Toshiba on our Macs (iMac G5s and eMac G4s and iBook G4s all running
OS 10.4), the duplexing on the other printers has gone screwy. The
Canons now consider the "Standard" print setting to be duplex, so we had
to create a separate setting for one sided. This is the opposite of how
they worked when we got them and how they were set.

But the worst is the 8500. It will not print duplex at all. We use
FileMaker Pro, and the setting is under Layout. When I look at the Show
Info option under Printer utilities, it shows that the duplexer is
installed. But I get only one-sided copies.

Since the Canons also went a little wacky, I really think it was the
installation of the Toshiba software that made this happen. But what the
heck to do about it? We need duplexing on both the big printers and on
the Toshiba.

TIA,
Amanda

These questions are all before the screw-up.

Have you normally enabled duplex in the control panels of the printers, or do
you normally drive duplexing in the Print dialogues? How are your printers
networked (AppleTalk, LPN, IPP)? Are you positive you're driving the
printers with the right PPDs?

Is the problem that (1) when you view the Layout options (or Features for
some Toshibas) the duplex options are dimmed; or is that (2) you choose
duplex and get simplex anyway?

Finally, you said you had some USB Canons -- are they screwed up too?

We have a saved "Preset" Duplex setting for use with the LW 8500. The
Duplex option is set under Layout: Two-sided: Long edge binding.

The LW8500 is Appletalk, accessed by Ethernet by the desktops and
through Airport by the laptops.

Yes, the PPDs are right. We've used this printer for years.
Additionally, I did uninstall and reinstall the drivers, and still have
the same problem.

They are screwed up in a different way. They have a duplexing
capability. But the "standard" setting is (or used to be) simplex. Since
we installed the Toshiba software, the Standard setting is set to
duplex, and of course can't be edited or renamed. Since we rarely use
those printers for duplexing, I have made a preset for one-sided. It
works, but this is another indicator to me that the Toshiba install did
this.

Thanks for your response. I'm about to call the copier people, but they
know a lot less about Macs than I do....

Amanda

It sounds like something has become corrupted in the printer settings /
saved presets, but I have no idea where Mac OS X stores such things and
it's not really a good idea to go playing in the "Library" folders. You
might get a better solution by asking in one of the Mac newsgroups like

comp.sys.mac.system
comp.sys.mac.printing
comp.sys.mac.misc
comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc

or searching / asking on one of the Mac web-based forums like
MacFixIt.com or Apple's own support website.
